Pilates isn't Just for the Gals!

When you think of Pilates, what comes to mind? For many people, the image of a female fitness enthusiast in a leotard and leg warmers is what immediately pops into their head…but contrary to popular belief, Pilates isn't just for the ladies—it can be just as beneficial for male clients too! Let's take a closer look at why every guy should consider adding this type of exercise to his workout routine.

What Are The Benefits of Pilates for Men?
First and foremost, Pilates helps improve posture and alignment. This is especially important for men who spend much of their day sitting at a desk or hunched over a computer screen. With regular Pilates practice, your core muscles will get stronger and you'll be able to stand taller and straighter with improved posture.

Pilates also benefits your mental health in addition to your physical health. It helps promote mindfulness by slowing down your movements so that you can focus on each rep more intently. This allows you to become aware of how your body feels while performing each exercise and forces you to stay present in the moment rather than letting your mind wander off elsewhere. And because it incorporates deep breathing exercises into its routines, it also helps reduce stress levels which can improve overall well-being.

Finally, if you're looking to switch things up from traditional free weights or machines-based exercises, then Pilates is an ideal choice due its low impact movements that still build strength without causing pain to your joints. It's a fun way to work out different parts of the body while still getting an effective workout—and no one has ever complained about having too much fun when exercising!

Adding Pilates into your workout routine can help take your fitness goals to new heights if you need assistance please contact Live Fit TODAY! Don't let anyone tell you that Pilates is just for women—it's definitely something that every man should consider giving a go!

Why Does My Neck Hurt After A Workout?

If you’re a regular at the gym chances are you’ve experienced the dread of neck pain after a workout. Whether it’s from lifting weights or running on the treadmill, a sore neck can be an unwelcome companion for days after your workout. But why does my neck hurt after a workout? Let’s chat about it!

The culprit could be Poor Posture and Pore Flexibility. When you slouch during your workout, your muscles are doing more work than need be, resulting in strain and pain. Slouching can also hinder your breathing which makes it harder for your body to get oxygen to your muscles which can also lead to fatigue and stiffness. So how do we fix this? Make sure that when you’re working out, you’re using proper technique and incorporate flexibility training into your routine. Flexibility helps improve range of motion in the shoulders and neck area which will reduce tension in those areas. If you are question where to start with correcting your form or improving your flexibility the personal trainers at both of our locations in Overland Park and Leawood would love to help guide you during your workouts.

The second culprit could be Poor Fit Equipment. Your equipment might not be fitted properly for you – if it's too large or too small, it can cause neck strain while using them. Make sure that the weight bench is the right size for you and that the weights fit comfortably in your hand so there's no extra stress on any part of your body while using them. Once again our fitness trainers would love to teach you how to utilize your personal workout equipment or our gym equipment to ensure you are performing each exercise properly.

All in all, there are several reasons why workout-related neck pain may occur - but they all boil down to one thing: taking care of yourself! Make sure that you take proper precautions before exercising (i.e., warming up!), maintain good form during exercise, use properly fitted equipment, stretch regularly, and cool down after each session to minimize risk of injury or strain. With these tips in mind, soon enough you won't have to worry about post-workout woe anymore! Happy sweating!

Benefits of Weight Training for Women

Weight training is commonly thought to be a male-dominated activity, but did you know that it also provides a number of physiological benefits to women?

Benefits of Weight Training for Women:

  • Increase muscle mass and strength. Unfortunately women naturally lose muscle mass as they age, which can lead to a decrease in metabolism and an increase in body fat. Weight training can help to counteract this by increasing and maintaining muscle mass.

  • Increase metabolism which will inevitably more calories even while at rest preventing unnecessary weight gain

  • Improved bone density. Unfortunately women are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, a condition characterized by a loss of bone density. Weight training, particularly exercises involving weight lifting or the use of resistance bands, can help to increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

  • Improved overall body composition. Weight training can help to create a leaner and more toned physique by building muscle and burning fat.

  • Improved cardiovascular health. Your heart rate increases as you lift the weight and exercise, which is beneficial to your cardiovascular health.

So don’t ever let someone tell you weight training is only for men! Live Fit is happy to help you begin your weight training regiment if help is needed! It's an excellent addition to any fitness routine and can help you become healthier and more confident. Contact Us today for more information!

What is Pilates?

Are you looking for a new workout that enhances strength, muscle tone, flexibility and improves aches and pains? Pilates is a terrific full body workout that is easily accessible for everyone.

About Pilates:

Pilates first appeared in the early 1900’s after being created by Joseph Pilates as an aid in the healing of dancers injuries. It soon became clear, nevertheless, that this activity would be helpful to the average individual. We all have a specific way that we stand, walk, move, and sit at our desks which can overwork our muscles this can lead to imbalances that can be balanced with Pilates.

The Pilates method emphasizes the use of the muscles in the low back and belly, precise movement patterns, and regulated breathing. The combination of these exercises emphasize core strength rather than muscle size. Each of these are emphasized by a Live Fit certified instructor.

Pilates Benefits:

Pilates is therapeutic and preventative because it isolates, calms, and strengthens muscular areas using control and breathing. Additionally, it helps strengthen your posture and alignment, resulting in a straighter, more powerful gait.

Pilates helps you feel better which increases wellbeing, much like yoga. Your core gets stronger, which reduces back pain brought on by weak, tight, or misaligned muscles. Major advantages can result from better posture building these muscles can help avoid hunching and compressing your lower back which can make it more difficult to breathe and digest food.

Why Does My Elbow Hurt?

Have you ever woken up in the morning and your elbow hurts? Or have you pulled the detergent off the shelf and gotten a shock from your elbow? Looking back, you don't remember hurting yourself and you didn't hit your elbow on anything? You start to worry, what could be causing the elbow pain?

If you can rule out a one-time injury like a sprain or fracture, tennis or golfer's elbow is very likely culprit. Despite the name, you don't have to play any sport to sustain this injury. These are simply forms of tendinitis caused by overuse of the elbow.

Now that you've self diagnosed yourself (thanks Internet), what can be done to treat these injuries? Rest first, try to limit activities that strain the elbow. This can include anything that requires arm twisting. Then ice the elbow for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day. Finally, you can stretch and strengthen the elbow and the muscles around it. Our Live Fit Personal Trainers are happy to help you with exercises and stretches to get rid of your elbow pain and keep it from coming back!

Staying Hydrated

August is here, and unfortunately we don’t seem to be getting any relief from this heat! Staying hydrated is extremely important every day but especially when it is so hot. You want to drink half your body weight in ounces plus 16 ounces for each hour of exercise. That can seem like a daunting task if you do not enjoy water so let’s chat about ways to stay hydrated in this weather.

  • Infuse your Water: try adding fruit to your water, my favorite is either lemon or cucumber and lime this can make drinking more enjoyable.

  • Eat High Water Content Fruit: watermelon is great to eat to stay hydrated in the summer and it tastes great too. Sometimes you just feel full from water so fruit is a great option.

  • Invest in a Quality Water Bottle: find a water bottle that keeps your drink cold, has an easy drinking spout, and is easy to carry with you. Convenance is always an excuse when I ask people why they don’t drink more water, don’t let that be you!!

How do you stay hydrated in the summer?

July 4th Recipes

How are you celebrating the Forth of July? I feel like with most holidays the Forth puts a lot of focus on food! BBQ’s are common this weekend, do you have any go to recipes that you prepare?

I am thankful for gatherings in the summer because I think on average there are lighter and fresher food options than winter holidays. I love any type of fresh fruit salad, balsamic vinegar has a special place in my heart so tomato/mozzarella salad is always a go to, and thankfully many BBQ’s focus around a fun meat option! My brother in law smoked chicken thighs last weekend and they were amazing and a lighter option than a hamburger or hot dog.

Below are a few recipes I am going to try out this weekend, let us know what you are making!

Healthy Pasta Salad: We had something similar to this last weekend so I am going to try to recreate it by using this recipe.

Pulled “Chicken”: We are doing this to make sure we have left overs for the week!

Margaritas: Is it unpatriotic to have a margarita on July 4th?!

Happy Summer!

Summer is finally here in Overland Park! Because school is out, the kids will be home, and many of us will begin to neglect our own routines. Is it more difficult to get your workout in during the summer, or is it easier because you can get outside?

My workout routine seems to change throughout the year depending on the weather. Obviously, I am more active during the summer because I am working in the yard, walking the dog, or kayaking on the lake! These are all excellent forms of exercise, but we must not overlook our stretching and rehabilitation routines!

Unfortunately, we see more injuries in the summer and fall because we try new activities; continuing to see your personal trainer is a great way to prevent these injuries. Your personal trainer can provide function tips to keep you safe while participating in summer activities. Even better, start training for specific activities a few months in advance so you are strong and capable.

What are your plans for the summer? Have you started training? Our certified personal trainers would love to help!

Summer Workouts

Do you have a favorite workout during the summer? Does your workout routine change with the season?

My workout routine changes depending how much I can get outside, unfortunately Kansas seems to have skipped spring and it has been incredibly hot this week!

Working out in the heat takes adjusting to so make sure you start slow and work your way up to your normal outdoor workout! Also, make sure to increase your water intake if you were sweating. You typically need an extra 16oz of water for every hour of exercise and this is extremely important if your working out in the heat.

Do you need assistance increasing your stamina for outdoor workouts in Overland Park? Our certified personal trainers can help! Contact us today for more information.
